The Partagás brand is Cuban cigar royalty, and it’s crown jewel is the Partagás Lusitania.
Known for it’s quality, the Partagás Lusitania is considered by many aficionados to be one of the best cigars ever created.
If you’re new to this and don’t know much about cigars, this one is a real treat.
Made from the finest tobacco leaves in Cuba, you won’t find anyone with a bad thing to say about this smoke.
Partagás Lusitania: The Beginnings
Partagás is one of the oldest cigar brands in the world, getting its start in 1845 in Havana.
Spanish-born Jamie Partagás moved to Cuba in 1831 to work for a businessman in Havana.
A keen eye for business, Partagás quickly bought up a number of fine tobacco producing farms and established his factory.
He was able to make a name for himself and the brand he created by picking from the finest tobacco leaves in the country.
Partagás was also known for his ability to blend and ferment the tobacco to get just the right taste for his cigars.
In 1868 he was murdered on one of his tobacco plantations and his son Jose took over the family business.
The brand continued to grow and by 1958 it was second only to H. Upmann in Cuba and accounted for a quarter of all cigars shipped.
Over the years it has retained its spot as one of the top cigar producers in the world and ships out 10 million cigars annually.
Partagás Lusitania: Modern Day
The Partagás Lusitania gets its name from World War I.
RMS Lusitania was a British Ocean Liner, meant as merely a transport vessel for transatlantic trade with the United States and other countries in North America.
Considered a civilian ship, the Lusitania was sunk by German U-boats in 1915. This incident changed the United States’ outlook on the war, given the fact that 128 American citizens were killed.
It is considered by many to be the turning point of America’s decision to enter WWI and a major event in world history.
It’s only fitting that one of the most important cigars in Cuba’s history should name itself after one of the most significant events of the 20th century.
